Why Low Turnout at SLC Police Rally? Lessons for those "Backing the Blue"

Update for 6/26/2000: Last Saturday, June 20, Utah Business Revival hosted a "Blue Rally" at Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City. Several hundreds showed up to celebrate police and challenge Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and other organizations calling to defund and/or effectively eliminate police departments.

Organizers had hoped for thousands to show up, and had boasted that, by their estimates, "over 100 cops from across the state" would attend. If correct, and assuming most of these officers brought some of their immediate family and friends, they may have accounted for a sizeable portion of those in attendance.

In a comatose State like Utah, getting hundreds of people to do much of anything political is something.  But given the gravity of these issues, why wasn't this crowd augmented by many thousands of additional supporters?

A myriad of factors could have hampered attendance, including Father's Day weekend, fear among those of weak constitution of catching a virus, fear that the counter-protest might spark violence, and insufficient marketing.

Another significant factor may be that few organizations focused on the right-to-keep-and-bear-arms (RKBA) promoted it.  When gun owners really put their mind to something, they can attract impressive crowds to rallies all by themselves, as was demonstrated earlier this year.

Word of the event certainly reached these organizations, yet they chose to remain quiet and on the sidelines. Why?  And what, if anything, can be done to improve relations?

1. Long Track Record of Abusing Gun Owners

As UT Gun Rights has reported for many years, Utah's Statute Enforcement Agents (SEAs) have a long, abysmal track record of abusing innocent gun owners.

Utah's Sheriffs & Police Chiefs Betray Constitutional Carry

Every session, SEAs lobbies undermine and attack gun owners, whittling away at their rights by a thousand cuts.

Never forgotten was the combined efforts of the Utah Sheriffs Association and and Utah Police Chiefs Association of lobbying the legislature and Gary "Fudd" Herbert to kill a constitutional lite bill in 2003.

2. Promoting Known Political Thugs

Another turn-off to the RKBA community is watching repeat violators of their rights being held up as faux champions to the public.

Con Artist Sean "Rambo" Reyes'

Moutsos has promoted the very criminal elements that have exacerbated the strife between gun owners and their government.  He has, for example, celebrated photo ops with Utah AG Sean "Rambo" Reyes.

In his comments, Moutsos shared a text AG Reyes had apparently sent him that he could not attend because of a family commitment.  That was ok.  The crowd was then encouraged to vote for Reyes.

Ironically, Moutsos soon afterward castigated SLC Police Chief Mike Brown for not attending because he, too, had a family commitment.  That was NOT ok.  Moutsos called for Brown to be fired.

Reyes had showed up to the recent event hosted by Utah Business Revival in rural Washington County.  And made a complete, pandering fool of himself.  He was safe there, being far away from the Democrats of Salt Lake City who have registered en masse to vote in the June 30th Republican primary.  Of course he wouldn't show up, because he doesn't want to rock their boat.

Reyes DID show up to a similarly-themed rally right there in SLC in 2017, hosted by the same shrill voices taking center stage today.  After attempting to pander to them, he was booed and made a hasty retreat, and he hasn't forgotten it.

Moutsos even received a "2020 Get It Done" award from Greg Hughes at the pro-police rally.
